Spring Soccer Cancelled

On April 14th the Abington Youth Soccer board held our monthly meeting. The main point of discussion revolved around the current pandemic. As is the case with pretty much everything in our lives at the current moment, there were a lot of questions that came up that we didn’t have answers to. Based on this, and the information we currently do have, the board voted to cancel the spring season and issue a full registration refund to families.

Massachusetts Youth Soccer and the South Shore Soccer League are still holding hope that May 4th will be the date that soccer activities will be allowed to start back up, so they have not cancelled anything beyond that date, yet. We understand that many people may feel that we are pulling the plug too early. Having heard the plans that the SSSL is putting together and knowing that many parents/players, understandably, may not feel safe enough or ready to play come May 4th, we felt it would be in the best interest of our program to cancel season.

All of us on the AYS board love the game and to watch the kids play it. Based on that, this was not an easy decision to make. For parents that were still hopeful for a spring season, we fully understand. A few board members are already working on ideas to make sure that once the ban is lifted and we can play soccer, that there will be opportunities for the kids to practice and get some games in.

We will be issuing refunds for the spring season over the next few weeks. This is not an easy process, so your patience is greatly appreciated. If you owe any money for winter leagues or trainings, those fees will be deducted out of your refund. The league has incurred costs for the spring season, but through our fundraising efforts over the past couple of years, those incurred costs will be offset resulting in a full refund.

We personally want to thank the many volunteers who had put a lot of time and effort in preparing for the spring season. We know this is a disappointing result, but your work is greatly appreciated.

We am sure that many people are going to have questions, so please do not hesitate to reach out to Brian (ayspres@gmail.com). AYS will continue to provide soccer related information via email and social media. Hopefully this all passes quickly, and our lives will be as back to normal as possible. Until then we hope you remain safe and I will be in touch soon.
